Weather still holding as we drive up to Matapouri along the coastal road. It's a small town with one shop but stunning sandy beaches. We park and start a headland walk that the DOC have bigged up on their Web page. It leaves from the far end of the beach and follows an undulating path with lookouts and bush. Whale bay is the goal and the path winds down to where the sea , sand and trees merge. I take a swim while a professional looking bunch of lads take up a serious beach cricket match! It has umpires with white hats and togs, serious catching, running and diving for the hard yellow ball. Lots of clapping, cheering and girly hugging when a wicket falls. We have come prepared with tuna sandwich and a flask of coffee.
Walk back through the match and back into Matapouri. The wind is all wrong here so we leg it to whangaumu bay for another swim..........this time Lesley takes the plunge as the temperatures pick up. Boats are being launched by cars driving on the beach or one boat seems to have wheels and drives into the sea using its own power!
Drive back late afternoon to Whangerei falls for a 4kms walk to the bottom of the falls and on through the forest to a walkway with large kauri trees.
Back to boutique hut for omlett and wine before last sleep here.
Rain in buckets with warnings for the next 3 days so we are battening down for our drive south where it is no better, Al nineo or something!
Pictures when tinternet speeds up.
